Minnesota Crookston Western Equestrian Competed in Pair of Road Shows in Wisconsin-River Falls

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Crookston western equestrian team competed in a pair of shows at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Sat., Dec. 2 and Sun., Dec. 3 in River Falls, Wis.

In Open Horsemanship, Katelynn Robertson (Sr., Roseau, Minn.) had a flawless ride to earn the win in her section, while Warner placed third. After the Reining and Open Horsemanship, Warner was tied in points for the Reserve High Point Rider title but fell to her opponent in ride off.

Whitney Fenna (Jr., Foley, Minn.) finished fourth in Advanced Horsemanship. Madeline Drayna (So., Milaca, Minn.) rode confidently to earn a win in her section of Novice Horsemanship, while EmmaRae Nelson (So., Thief River Falls, Minn.) putting together a solid ride to finish fourth. Shayla Marthaler (So., Osakis, Minn.) put together a beautiful ride to finish first in her section of Novice Horsemanship, while Sadie Bingham (Fr., Gary, S.D.) took fifth. Whitney Weidenborner (So., Bemidji, Minn.) finished sixth, while Skyla Knudtson (Jr., Blooming Prairie, Minn.) was fifth in the same section of Novice.

In Intermediate Horsemanship, Alyssa Evavold (Fr., Battle Lake, Minn.) finished fourth and was able to point up into Novice. Jayde Proffitt (So., Winsted, Minn.) won her class of Intermediate, while Jordyn Newberg (Fr., Deer River, Minn.) placed a strong second. Rae Ann Michel (Fr., Monticello, Minn.) finished just shy of placings.

“We experienced some small mistakes throughout the day,” said Head Coach Kayla Kruger. “This caused us to have lower placings than we would have liked for a few of our riders, however we were looking to come back even stronger for Sunday’s competition.”

Sunday’s show opened with Robertson and Warner experiencing difficulties in the Open Reining as they fell short of placings. In Open Horsemanship, both Robertson and Warner took fourth in their sections.

Fenna took fifth in Advanced Horsemanship during Sunday’s show. In Novice, the Golden Eagles found great success with Nelson and Evavold claiming first-place finishes. In addition, Weidenborner, Drayna and Marthahler all rode to strong second-place nods, while Knudtson was also strong as she finished third.

In Intermediate Horsemanship, Michel and Proffitt each put together second-place rides, while Newberg took fifth.

“We made lots of improvement over the course of Saturday and Sunday,” Krueger said. “I am especially proud of this team’s freshman and sophomores whose skills have flourished throughout the fall semester. Each rider continues to find their confidence within the arena, making them a force to reckon with for future competitions.”
